Last Sunday was the opening of the group exhibition ‘Hitte’ (Heat in Dutch). Intrigued by the pictures I posted on the blog, I went to have a look. When I walked in, I got a warm and homely feeling, nothing like the regular exhibition space. The- very kitcheny- cupboards, displaying the work, contained lifelike, ceramic, food items. One cupboard was filled with stacks of ceramic waffles (yes, obviously from Belgium :) that looked like they had stayed in the waffle-iron for to long and got scorched black. The next one showed a full string of garlic in the shape of a neckpiece, made out of very thin ceramic, and some ceramic cake tins, dripping with rich, vanilla colored, glaze. These pieces were alternated by saddle-shaped shields; built out of thin layers of clay. To me, they embodied the human presence in this domestic setting, almost as if aprons had been taken off and left there. One of the shields even had straps with a buckle attached to it,suggesting wearability. The fact that Hilde De Decker is a jewelry artist shows through, even when she uses ceramic sculptures as a medium. In her works, the suggestion of the human body plays an important role, although not necessarily as a wearer. I was really drawn to all of the objects, because of their homey suggestion, but after a while they started to push me away. The delicious waffles: completely burnt! The cake tins, even with glaze on, were only molds and not actual cakes. The huge string of garlic looked too fragile to touch, and would smell enormously if real, not to mention the symbolism of garlic. The shields became defensive instead of protective. Like most things in life, these works surely had two sides to them!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 218px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpDNhAdCcBtbFPRahbH4MtWQDpfVM0Ti-s4jOsMKUUk5PCKbn43M4qbI1aOg6lJUmcosmw4D8kP56nGElX86LbmcO_yhE_LMITa3oDg_V2JGgJpwEOJqGlG-sGTmir68o27M-xapGf4nHJ/s400/hitte+overzicht.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5673128753663778690" />
The exhibition is also worth a visit for the quirky shape of the building, which had been restored and made into exhibition-space by <a href="http://www.franksteyaert.net/"target="new">Frank Steyaert. And for the works by the other participating artists of course, such as the wonderful sculptures by AnneMarie Laureys with amazing texture and color inside and out. And the work ‘Fever’ by Hanneke van Hage out of Persian tapestry and porcelain shoes, laid out in a certain pattern.
This exhibition runs until December 4th, at gallery and private museum Frank Steyaert, Tinnenpotstraat 16, Gent, Belgium.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-75620293196756702752011-10-30T20:36:00.004+01:002011-10-30T20:41:23.357+01:00Happy Halloween!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 252px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcmH5EzCPbKikFxd9xS9BrHoYuItzIf4zjC_QSshnsWiyDr1TSJsEDU1usGkxvswrds6_Wt0cZ-Qnq3eZvpux8B8w_P8ZsbdhQiwbddQMKhPEGAe3MJ_xPTXUKkdv2DdTwn8Nqwrs-h7Fq/s400/IMG_1391_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669355398960936418" />
Everybody at our house is getting really excited for Halloween tomorrow.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbPyCeiITnZI46ldahv0Q8Aas34Fcgc8glb2m9y4zOtXxY8pTpXtBXviImIHz5WvlvHd8PNHwOW4DPl6XWjyqiXg4euOeb_jiPaFHGKf-WEkYwClrcGLe9IfNuxXoAMnoEwyYTGckAMISb/s400/IMG_1423.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669358337193110578" />
We have been decorating and fantasizing all day! <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj59Q5EMRzUxmaWe_xAVAC3xyOyz3GPIfAE3iGu6pDYJDWZ1tr4v3DMv4JMe6EgVTEpEE31qdVsjHA-FvlSCdNVBwWFzJa2apIQWDV3beheVZ8AENB4sRm7HutIXsRTEM8ZJdf8w_8jSQJ4/s400/IMG_1400.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669358327378813074" />
There´s lots of inspiration to be found online, so here is a little summary for you...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRBF9JDiMCFybWM-pXMs-enLKIoFZtFpQqGpQYPrnNLb_sCOM-f2Fc2TzrJxdyIJSOhqOI8Khau3U0Uw-wqDWzyknm-ozh8UW76XNuF6glV4N7Lw6tkqFyg5uHDkstkskqwVy-fTSeH3vY/s400/IMG_1396.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669358323128200194" />

Food is a great way to celebrate Halloween, so get your house filled with the scent of <a href="http://thishomemadelife.com/pumpkin-bread-with-maple-butter"target="new">this delicious pumpkin bread and maple butter. This great picture is what I saw first when I opened Klimt02 Gallery newsletter #35. The rough brick wall had me intrigued, and I wondered about the lamp. When scrolling down I found a perfect outline of the United Kingdom, made from plaster left on the wall. WOW! A red-ish dot and a 'g' marked the spot where the event would take place. This U.K. has a g-spot; and a sniggering smile appeared across my face.

The g stands for gallery of course. <a href="http://www.galleryso.com/"target="new">Gallery S O in London is hosting the touring exhibition ‘Collect rocks, plant flag’ curated by <a href="http://www.klimt02.net/"target="new">Klimt02 (Leo Caballero and Amador Bertomeu) with the support of <a href="http://www.benjaminlignel.com/"target="new">Benjamin Lignel. Our one grapevine seemed to really explode with large blueberry sized, delicious, grapes! (edible grapes, homegrown in Belgium, it’s a rarity) Us grape-lovers, ate such a lot of them, we went into overkill… This weekend, we happily received an enormous mountain of homegrown apples, but I am not willing to let us get apple-overkill. Opposed to grapes-recipes, I know lots of apple-recipes, as apples are very common (but lots of love left here, though). When considering which ones to use for this autumns’ apple mountain, Mrs. Ans’ apple raisin muffins stood out big time. Apart from the fact that these muffins are so incredibly soft and delicious, they are also healthy (no butter!), quick and easy to put together, using unpeeled apples. The recipe makes a huge quantity, so loads to go round, whilst left over ones can be frozen. Mrs. An was a warm and loving person, and a great chef. We had many memorable dinners at her house, or An’s café as she liked to call it. The apple raisin muffin recipe comes from her ‘International Cookbook’, put together before she passed away, by her, and her English as a Second Language- students. Needless to say I am extremely happy that I have been given a copy, a real treasure!

APPLE RAISIN MUFFINS –about 30 (OR 2 BREADS)
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgggU6qa49-xdC7OVda7Q1rvJaltknhh36DFZGFzYdTm5SqgabIfCLLkgonA89JdSb7m4iSRv6PBQ3rGsQ2Ck6lDrDZC-6Az-CVEZdqWthWaUonk92BizvhblJMwq3Vo6UuzlrLHiMJEP8U/s400/broesvi+ingredients.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657517570276724434" />
Ingredients:
3 cups apples (unpeeled, chopped) –approx. 3 medium apples
3 cups flour
2 ½ cups sugar
1 ¼ oil –sunflower
4 eggs (beaten)
1 tbsp + 1tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp cinnamon
1 ½ tsp salt
1 ½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cloves
½ tsp baking powder
2/3 cup raisins –or cranberries
2/3 cup walnuts –or flaked almonds
Directions:
• Put all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
• Beat all ingredients on low for a minute. It is an intra uterine device-concept by Ronen Kadushin. The image of his real “Bearina’ IUD is what is shown first. It is an open design, available for downloading. It is even possible to order the real thing for 1,25€! It made me question the functionality of the design straightaway. For an IUD it is huge! Imagine pushing a 1 cent coin through a hole, with the diameter similar to the diameter of a matchstick? This is why IUD’s are T-shaped and fold out once inserted. And how about the sterilization of the coin? It is common sense that coins are amongst the dirtiest things to touch. I concluded that the designer must have crossed over the fine line of art with this product.
Ronen Kadushin wants to act against pharmaceutical companies charging exuberant amounts of money, for things that are low-cost in production. He states: ”The Bearina IUD is a political product. It demonstrates the disruptive potential of 3D printed Open Designs to give free and global access to essential products, and circumvent industries (such as the Pharma industry) that aggressively defend their intellectual property to control the price and availability of their products.”
Furtheron he seems serious about the production of the IUD, (“in partnership with a forward-looking pharma company”) once improved and experimented on. For now, the purpose of the ‘Bearina’ -design is to be visually friendly, in order to appeal to younger women. -I am wondering what age these younger women are supposed to be?- And should absolutely not be used as an IUD or for any internal use. With a very clear disclaimer following. Hm, maybe more of a social-project then an art-project, but certainly not a new kind of real IUD -design. I’m so relieved! There’s definitely some love in this....

Found through DEZEEN, with an interesting array of comments on their article.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-12623834376188583812011-08-23T10:02:00.003+02:002011-08-23T10:04:40.405+02:00Summer love- part two<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWwb8Qbqevo8V7Ct1oOskyRuWnxsWjkbF1K6Gx4Me2n2oiy0_3imeE8BBa1h9bHIuoalWRCyox7LY9Gx_ZitJrPDPm9oZANCpP0QY9PZELKb2f-x5UVXdzFV3C0kkGacIJgYMnw84f9BPX/s320/hot+beach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643790825820659010" />
Although the weather has not been very summer-like in the northern part of Europe, we have still managed to sneek in some of our beautiful seasonal traditions. Like pouring water into a vase. This action is shaped into a real object by Supabold. The best part is you get to decide which part of the pouring action you love most! On their website you can set your own parameters, all you have to do is choose. I love jewelry and I love to blog, but there is more! I love art, design, food, nature, cities, civilization, technology, imperfection and simple things, although not necessarily in that order. I love people big and small, accidental encounters, profound conversations and even the occasional gossip. I love the internet and reality. I find wonderful things everywhere in my life and would love to share it with you through this blog. There will still be plenty of jewelry, that won’t change. There will just be more to be excited about, a broader perspective. It is still my broesvitrine blog, but all about beauty that lies in the eyes of the beholder.

A little taste of the magic:
<img style="cursor:pointer; Although the artist insists they are all untitled, some rings have a story or characteristic to name them by. That name may refer to their shape (the Padua-ring has the shape of a building in Padua, the Aquarius-ring is partly blue and has the shape of a fin), or their material (the Edinburgh-ring is made from a very special stone bought from a museum in Edinburgh!), and they are all made with an obvious dedication to perfection. But what is most striking about the rings: they all show a great playfulness and joy of working! All 70 of them! This made me excited to be there, and it also made it very hard to choose one to show you.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 260px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_5hkIQLyEwOMAMfXruBmaPGCe6M5PxKKnXuX43WJAOpblYc6gHVIOrKUbWIkB40jWrLkOcqTxqbe0fTLvDfb5swx8FgJH96TyJUljSeeME3e5hi5XK4anQ9zh98dEf4UbHFT44nkL7de6/s320/Fritz+Maierhofer.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5579610992940679746" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 255px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWMYvlfs_3lrlf2qgJc66q4b8PQZxBwHD9lveCSpEi1etzVzs6Fta5EKVhn4KwyEvLHicm3qtrwItrB6KD3f4XHrClOQBlWg4KpC3qaRn402bRtvYOTvT4k4bxY21M9QDNu2wYu9nhQAgB/s320/Fritz+Maierhofer+A.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5579610999581908114" />
This ring was a favorite from the start. It is made from red corian (a hard to get color) making it stand out. The upright-rectangular shape fits with the other 70 rings. It has been cut around the edges to give it a sculptural feel. It has different size holes in it showing off the playfulness. One of the holes is used to perfectly combine the two pieces of the ring. This allows the wearer to fully extend the playfulness it already expresses! What more could you possibly want? (I know what I want and my birthday is coming up…)

The exhibition ‘Fritz Maierhofer (yes, that is the established jewelry-artist): 70 rings’ at Caroline Van Hoek Gallery runs until the 24th of April in Brussels, Belgium.

Both Fritz Maierhofer and Caroline Van Hoek Gallery are members of Klimt02.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-1115560852961694992011-02-19T21:48:00.007+01:002011-02-22T10:12:01.522+01:00…to pull a rabbit out of a hat… 2011 <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTzJn9dAeiPvdFBkhod20wu_nsAQk8-digr9c9EkR7qFDxwkrvgMdb0wUSbOSXvHtGKEH4bT6KP54dxK2W-s9X5obPEAUolbMhs64ruglzWtJKMLhslg1PArlDTO0euGKjG-VHrZH8coz_/s320/23327.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575505996827573202" />
The rabbits depicted in this neckpiece look so peaceful, that I almost want to pet them. The things that are stopping me are the surrounding flowers, with their bright red enamel centers and square-edged leaves. They seem to protect the rabbits. The animals look like they might be wild, situated in a field, but the title ‘…to pull a rabbit out of a hat…’ gives away their captivity. They have come out of the hat and are now free to roam. One bunny is on the look out, turning its’ ears, while the other rabbit is relaxing- such a cozy sight!

Lately I have learned that rabbits like to be petted a lot (my son was very determent to have one for his birthday) and rabbits seem to follow me ever since. But probably not as much as German artist Tabea Reulecke, the majority of her work revolves around rabbits. It is amazing how much expression she puts in her bunnies! Her pieces come in various forms, often including beautiful enamel drawings like this one.

To celebrate the year of the rabbit, Tabea Reulecke has a solo exhibition at ATTA Gallery, in Bankok, Thailand from Februari 19th (tonight!) until March 15th 2011.

The exhibition is also displayed on Klimt02.

Our own sweet little bunny :):
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 297px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS6FeYFbrptGnnthtkiD8f5rkPDncICNezXzazhxbRtz-oTZg1HAYNmSCRrmulHGYCUYxPXiBFge-rZIKc0VAsgjJccd5wOK_rik_ASnodZGcYNLwEtSCtICXtXVQzKCxQ1JsXO6u4fv6R/s320/broesvi+bunny+koninja.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575506288789033970" />Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-81378010750766027272010-12-23T22:14:00.036+01:002010-12-24T00:20:46.637+01:00The last post of 2010.It has been really quiet on this blog, because it has been very busy for me. We went on a familytrip to Italy, and started in Rome. The boys really wanted to see the ancient Colosseum in the south (it spoke to their imagination) but were also happy to visit the contemporary Maxxi-museum in the north (they thought the banister was designed as a marble-track ☺). In between I wanted to make a stop, not to go shopping, but to visit the Alternatives Gallery! In the old centre, the small gallery is almost hidden in one of the tiny streets. Inside, there is a great collection of wonderful works though! I did not know where to look first…

Alternatives has artist from all over the world, but also some that are very close to home, like Margherita Marchioni. Her neckpiece ‘Materiamorfosi:shopping bags’ stood out to me. It attracted my attention because of its’ colorfulness, which felt refreshing after the ancient buildings we visited. I wondered if the neckpiece was made out of sweets, and was surprised to find it was made from shopping bags! In all her work, Margherita Marchioni recycles everyday objects, without actually changing the material. The shopping bags have been cut into strips, rolled and bundled together with differently colored ones to start a new life. It is still basically the same thin plastic, once used to carry shopping with, only worn in a wonderful altered way. For me, it was great to see some ‘local’ work, and what makes it even better, is that its’ made out of local products! I always cherish the shopping bags brought back from a trip as a kind of souvenir…. This question can only come from Ana Cardim, who has a passion to make interactive, sociable jewelry-art. This takes shape in her recent project “Aesthetic Nutrition”.

The project consists of a video, projected on a wall, three heaps of rice, chopsticks and three bowls containing one, two and three hand-made rice grains. Each grain is made from pure gold, weighs half a gram, and has the economic value of about 15 kilos of eatable dry rice. (How many grains would that be?) In total, the project exists of three grams of gold, enough for a beautiful gold ring, and 90 kilo’s of rice, which can provide a meal for 1800 people! In the video you’ll see a girl trying to eat it all… Everyone that visited ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was given a cup filled with delicious rice-pudding.

With her project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim seeks attention for the idea of the difference in quantity, and levels of value, between the esthetic value of gold and the value given to the basic human need for food.
I am glad this project touches the subject of discrepancy in value and quantity from an aesthetic point of view. The rice-colored, ceramic bowls that contain the golden grains, are shaped like up-side-down rice heaps and make a good visual contrast with the actual heaps of rice. The chopsticks both separate and connect the two, underlining the visual link. The video shown on the wall, completes the display. The action of handing out cups of rice-pudding causes the viewer to connect to the exhibit. How can you resist thinking about the subject, when looking at the serene beauty of the whole set-up, whilst eating yummie pudding!

The launch of the ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ project happened on the 6th of July, and was commissioned by Bypass, an art magazine that invites artists to write about their work. The second magazine is due to be released in October 2010 and will contain an extensive article by Ana Cardim.

‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was held in Appleton Square, which is a multivalent space geared towards diverse artistic manifestations and towards the sharing of multidisciplinary experiences. That‘s the case with this piece ‘Panic’ by Sweden’s Anders Ljungberg. He is a silversmith who is interested is the relationship between a functional object and its’ user and their environment. His motto is: “We are defining objects, objects are defining us.” His particular interest is in handles, as they often are the link between object and user. Their position on the object dictates the way it is used.

Handles play a very important role in the work ‘Panic’ too. It exists of a silver jug and a table that have started living their own lives. This jug did not have handles, so it decided to cut off the legs of the table it is standing on and use them as a handle and a leg for itself. The jug has a solid base and a good chance of being held by its’ handle. But now, it has left the table leaning over to one side, causing danger of the jug sliding off!
I guess this is where Anders Ljungberg pictures the user coming to the rescue. Instead of the jug being there for the use of its’ owner, the owner/user has to be there to save the jug! I really like the way the piece demands interaction. The jug is clearly the starting point of this work, and mixes with the table in a funny way. Quite urgently, the potential user has to become part of the work. Panic all round!

This piece was one of many discussed in a talk held by Anders Ljungberg, which part of the symposium ‘Fine Silver: Lectures on Contemporary Metal’ at the PHL- University College in Hasselt, Belgium on the 29th of May. The lectures were held in context of the honorary doctorate that was awarded to Michael Rowe the day before!

(For the die-hard fans of this blog: What do you get when you have Alert and an Apocalyse: Panic! ☺)Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-66155908385350438062010-05-17T11:49:00.008+02:002010-05-17T11:55:04.381+02:00Alert 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXgXMQvjGFg9c1rYGOBgv-tVVx9yhIyS9TT99aBCJAPbZGnJcb3b7EbtU7W4b2QaZFRSH37Edu7ZHkzOC3po_L6IPbIXkHub6e6M4IBB5tDbs1KqnwQve-8DADLa70R9Yi2I3P-bVt1hO0/s320/19556.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472174119104017298" />

This neckpiece sends out a warning, so we should have seen this before the previous post ‘What after the apocalypse?’ Its’ title ‘Alert 2010’ kind of gives it away, and the alarming orange color was probably the reason for that title. A great way of getting attention!

Although the individual pendants of the neckpiece may or may not be a recognizable object, it is the combination that bonds them. That is how artist Robin Quigley intended her piece to work. She carefully selected objects that work well together, despite their difference in value, shape or material. By lining them up, she gives them a solid structure. Some pendants got a coat of pigment to match the color, unifying even more. That way it is hard for me to imagine that they were once separate objects.

‘Alert 2010’ has ten pendants, which to me is a very special number right now. My eldest just turned ten, which means we have been a family for ONE whole beautiful decade!

The exhibition ‘Remains’ opens on the 20th of May at Gallery Loupe in Montclair, New Jersey, U.S.A.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-51090611840841686732010-04-30T12:32:00.004+02:002010-04-30T13:31:08.320+02:00What after the apocalypse?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLcyIZ6P2Mx6XK4_RAU7uKcyJDi9oyW9gcLhOgEEE3-clBckuQcur3hNecbxH127AJ_WRJDktek2H2EkrSmAuYt-7lfWB05UXaPKyJsC7roiNt39tow5w_5utTcMKe2J43OU6e8IWAOMw2/s320/apocalypse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465876622763598050" />

For this post I am staying in Belgium, where artist Willy Van De Velde has been around for quite a while. And, more impressively, without any formal training in the broad artistic field he is working in. His jewellery ranges from big helmets and large neckpieces, to the more recent, smaller sized, rings and bracelets.

Besides the size, there has been no change in the material use, though. As shown in the bracelet above, he is still working with plexiglas (acrylic sheet). Although he has been using this material since the eighties, it still gives the jewel a sense of futurism. Funny how a futuristic looking piece can have a retro feel to it.

The title of the work, “What after the apocalypse?” can be taken quite literally, if you see the round, clear bracelet as a symbol of the world and the descending fire as its’ ending. Your arm can save the world by never taking the bracelet off. The piece has been meticulously made, every scratch is sanded and polished to a smooth, shiny surface. The bracelet has been assembled with neat little screws instead of more messy glue. In this way parts can also be replaced in case of breakage. The result is a graphically strong piece and an apocalypse to my liking, a very clean one!

The exhibition ‘What after the apocalypse?’ is held until the 28th of May at Silke&the Gallery, in Antwerp.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233414427852761456.post-29965306758112150402010-04-25T10:11:00.004+02:002010-04-25T10:21:26.403+02:00Our vulnerable position<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyWvVk3IfwE7P7-DLLYTF0VZaUWFYKE79PSnBBMovC_shvIJ2A4sgijkN-vUfx4UmfFA8eIJZA_bXKaMPBFqhDmtRO3E-bq_ySrR8RErjZp2OY0r1PhlydqpkzjwUv7F3qHRwe64LXPwlt/s320/ourvunerableposition.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463985152137993762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj4CMs0E9SBMvcveGA5WxAQez2Zo9XD2yRhOJ8AEhOZevSBwks3sDrf26v8bmrww0euN-BS4f1Oq1FPZKdMvWRetD6vcZLH_E7C9pU1SGS3A6m4zRre0UUXfVLK1A-OX7QpNiL494YtJGm/s320/closeupVP.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463985155050288946" />

From student work in the last post, to a post about work from someone who has recently graduated. Showing the work from her Masters graduation from Konstfack in Stockholm, Belgian Hannah Joris created an installation with 99 brooches. They are all made from the same material, dried potato and iron! She carved the potatoes and hung them to dry, pierced by the iron brooch-pin. That way the potato shrinks around the iron, and becomes a compact, strong mass. To her, every potato represents a person, which is why she carved them into body-like shapes. Similar to what happens when people age, the shapes shriveled up, looking like they suffered while doing so. This is what Hannah Joris wants to show, although not the actual suffering, aging, shrinking and shriveling. But the vulnerable expression the shapes obtain, and beauty that results from it.

About half of the 99 brooches are on display, enough to come across as one group. Which is the way I saw the work. As I got closer I could separate the individual brooches, their similarities and differences. The different colors came from the different kinds of potato, vaguely resembling wood. The different shapes came from the way they were carved and dried. I could recognize their expressions. I could see the suffering, aging, wrinkling and vulnerability, and, with some, even the beauty of that. Some were quite touching, others daunting, and some possibly cute! The material used looked right, the shapes looked very natural, (because of their color?) I had the feeling I was looking at something very special, not at something as ordinary as a potato. Not one second it crossed my mind that I was looking at food. The familiarity of the shapes to the human shape was well done, and eating them would feel like cannibalism!

The brooches are exhibited specially for the ‘Art Brussels’ fair, at Caroline Van Hoek Gallery, in Brussels, Belgium.Broes van Itersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06811513751742308987noreply@blogger.com0
